PHARMACY FIRST SCHEME
Pharmacy First Service is a service whereby patients are encouraged to consult with their community pharmacist first rather than their GP, for a list of common conditions. The aim of a Pharmacy First Service is to move activity, including consultations and advice for common conditions, from GP practices to community pharmacies.
Pharmacies are well placed within communities and are essentially an ‘open door’ to the Health Service offering free independent health advice without the need for an appointment. One of the services that community pharmacists are trained to provide is the treatment of minor ailments. When a patient presents at a pharmacy with symptoms of a minor ailment, the pharmacist establishes if the symptoms are indeed minor in which case the pharmacist can offer advice and, if necessary, recommend appropriate treatment. If the symptoms are of a more serious nature, the pharmacist will refer the patient to another healthcare professional.
There are five services within Pharmacy First:
Pharmacy First for Every day Health Conditions
This service is offered from every community pharmacy in NI and provides advice and if necessary treatment for conditions such as:

acne
athlete’s foot
diarrhoea
earwax
groin infection
haemorrhoids
head lice
mouth ulcers
oral thrush
scabies
threadworms
vaginal thrush
verrucae
Prescription Requests
Prescriptions will not be ready until 48 -72 hours after ordering. Please allow this time to avoid disappointment.
When possible use the repeat prescription line to order.
You must dedicate a pharmacy for your prescription for collection as you can longer collect prescriptions from the surgery.
Please ring you chemist to check for prescriptions before ringing the surgery.
